Balcones Brimstone

2013 Vintage
53% ABV
$70

This smoke monster bourbon will take you by surprise. Although Balcones refers to the Brimstone as a "Corn Whiskey", not a bourbon. It's made with 100% blue corn and lives up to its label as a "Texas Scrub Oak Smoked" whiskey. Brimstone won several world whiskey awards including: Liquid Gold Award - 2013 Jim Murray's Whiskey Bible; Gold - 2012 Wizards of Whisky London; Gold - 2011 New York World Wine & Spirits; and it has received 95.5 points in Jim Murray's Whiskey Bible.

Tasting Notes

First Tasted at Meeting No. 37 in June 2015
 •  4.5

Liquid smoke and BBQ spare ribs. You want this in your cabinet to impress your meat eating buddies.

 •  4.0

Pure texas scrub oak on the nose. Not to be confused with peat smoke Super unique. It tastes like the liquid condensed version of a really good rub for a rib. You'd think it would be less sophisticated, but it's surprisingly elegant. I have BBQ breath.

 •  4.0

Super smoky! An entire slab of ribs was turned into a drink. An unbelievably smooth finish for how smokey the nose & taste are.

 •  3.5

Obviously smokey, but can't place the exact wood - heavy. Not overly smokey on the pallet, but the nose. Delicious. Balances the 100% blue corn mash.

 •  3.5

Major smoke on the nose. But well balanced finish - a bit of tingly numbness.

 •  3.5

Smells like liquid smoke and tastes a lot better than that sounds. Lagavulin's evil cousin. Mesquite?

 •  3.0

Oh so smokey! Definite barbecue flavor. Intense prosciutto.
