We tasted Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve 23yr at Meeting No. 33 on February 26, 2015. We rated it exceptionally at 4.74 out of 5. Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve 23yr is the top rated Bourbon that we've tried. At a street price of $828, this spirit is expensive, but well worth the high price tag.
Dark Amber color Indian spices on the nose - cumin, curry, pepper Opens up to vanilla and then caramel apple pie Tobacco on the palette, nice structure and spice
Full sweet and pleasant aroma. First taste was a sweet grassy, dry wood shop taste. Second taste was a delicious buttery maple syrup flavor.
Age has treated this treated this spirit kindly. All those dark notes--Graham craxker, syrup, cinnamon, chocolate, root beer, anise--have all melded into one beautiful symphony. Just magnificent. *Mic drop*
Wonderful, full nose - Cherry syrup, spice, and Kentucky Potpourri. Complex. Gentle, slow-rolling, tongue-covering stuff. The hype had me to believe this was too old. Nay I say. So deep I can't see the end.
I'm so excited to drink this, so I'm making it a ceremony. Smelling this gives me no hints of anything except some sweet. I warm it up and swirl it to condensation and sniff again, to which I'm met with caramel, nutmeg, and sugar. Still can't drink, Justin keeps talking.... Finally, taking my first taste melts into a blend of vanilla and cherry chocolate. As I drink more, the lingering taste of that caramel I smelt on the nose remains present. A fine celebration of bourbon.
