This is from Nikka's first distillery and was crafted using traditional distilling methods. The pot stills are still heated using a direct fire coal method instead of steam. This is said to create a more oily, rich flavor profile. It is aged for 15 years in a combination of American oak, sherry butt and Mizunara barrels.
We tasted Nikka Yoichi - 2019 at Meeting No. 87 on December 19, 2019. We rated it very highly at 3.94 out of 5. Nikka Yoichi - 2019 ranks 3rd overall in Japanese Whisky. At a street price of $120, this spirit is on the pricier side, but well worth the money.
The nose pushes me away but the flavor draws me in.
Cartoony peat, hot
Sherry and raspberry upfront with peat balanced throughout! Solid dram!
